Pier M. Larson

Pier M. Larson was born in Paris.  Son of American educators, he spent his childhood in Madagascar.  He came to the United States in 1980 for university training.  He earned a B.A. in History from the University of Minnesota in 1985 and a Ph.D. in African History from the University of Wisconsin--Madison, in 1992.  Author of three books and many articles, his interests revolve around Africa in world history.  He specializes in the history of East and Southern Africa, Madagascar and the Francophone islands of the Western Indian Ocean, slavery, literacy, religion, and the history of French empire.  He teaches at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.
